UP woman
sets Guinness record for longest hair on a living person
Smita Srivastava’s hair measures an astonishing 236.22
cm (7 feet 9 inches).
A 46-year-old woman from Uttar Pradesh, who has been growing her
hair since she was 14, has bagged the Guinness World Record for the world’s
longest hair on a living person.
Smita
Srivastava’s hair measures an astonishing 236.22 cm (7 feet 9 inches). She
was inspired by her mother and credits her genes for the “healthy growth” of
her long locks.
“In
Indian culture, goddesses traditionally had very long hair. In our society, it
is considered inauspicious to cut hair, so that is why women used to grow
hair,” Srivastava told the Guinness World Records (GWR) website. “Long hair
enhances the beauty of women,” she said.
She also wanted to emulate the style of Bollywood
actresses from the 1980s, who had “long and beautiful hair”.
She
usually washed her hair twice per week and the entire process, including
washing, drying, detangling and styling, takes up to three hours each time.
Once
her hair is detangled and fully dried, she combs it and braids it, tying it
into a bun. She has never thrown away her hair for the past 20 years, she told
GWR. She began collecting her fallen-out hairs when she suddenly began to
experience a “major” hair loss.
“The
idea of throwing them away was saddening me. I started crying that I had such a
hair loss,” she recalled. “That was the first moment of my life that I did not
throw away my hair.”
In September, a 15-year-old Sikh boy from Uttar Pradesh set the world record for the
longest hair on a male teenager. The Guinness World Records posted Chahal’s
video on X on September 14. “People say my hair are very long, very thick. They
have a good volume. They wish they had hair like this. My hair measures in at
130 cm or just about four feet and three inches,” he said in the video.
Due to their religious beliefs, Chahal’s parents
never cut his hair, and he too follows it now. “I practise Sikhism and we are
forbidden from cutting our hair,” he said. One of the core tenets of Sikhism is
to never cut one’s hair, as it is a gift from God. Chahal usually ties his hair
in a bun and covers it with a dastar (turban), as is the custom among Sikhs.
